Common Uses

Building a monthly household budget from scratch
Checking where your money actually goes each month across categories
Seeing if your spending matches the 50/30/20 budgeting guideline
Planning a budget before an income or expense change (new job, new rent)

💡 Pro Tip

Add irregular expenses (annual insurance, car maintenance, gifts) as a monthly category using their yearly cost divided by 12 — otherwise a real cost gets left out just because it isn't due this month.

📖Expense & Budget Calculator Guide

Tracks every income source and expense category to show your true remaining balance live, with automatic Essential/Lifestyle/Savings classification and an optional 50/30/20 guideline comparison.

When to use this

Use this to build a real budget — see exactly where your money goes each month, whether you're over or under budget, and how your spending compares to a standard budgeting guideline.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. 1Add your income sources Salary, business income, freelance income, bonuses, or anything else — name and amount each one.
  2. 2Choose your income period Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Yearly — all figures convert automatically.
  3. 3Fill in your expense categories 13 common categories are pre-loaded (Housing, Food, Transport, and more) — enter each as a fixed amount or % of income, add your own categories, and remove any you don't need.
  4. 4Review your Budget Status A color-coded status from Over Budget to Healthy Surplus, based on your remaining balance.
  5. 5Check the 50/30/20 comparison (optional) See how your Needs/Wants/Savings split compares to the standard budgeting guideline.

Tips for best results

  • Name your Savings/Investment category with a word like "saving" or "invest" so the tool correctly counts it in your Savings Rate and the Income Allocation breakdown.
  • Use the Period Conversion table to see your budget at a Weekly, Monthly, or Yearly view without re-entering anything.
  • The 50/30/20 comparison is a general guideline, not a rule you must follow — use it as a reference point, not a requirement.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Naming an expense category something generic and expecting it to be correctly classified as Essential, Lifestyle, or Savings — classification is based on keywords in the name you choose.
  • Forgetting that Disposable Income and Remaining Balance are different figures — Remaining Balance also nets out anything named as savings, while Disposable Income doesn't.
  • Not using the ↺ Reset All button when starting a fresh budget — leftover categories from a previous scenario can skew your new numbers.
