Common Uses

Working out monthly savings needed for a house deposit or big purchase
Planning how long it'll take to reach an emergency fund target
Setting a realistic savings plan for a wedding, trip, or major event
Checking whether a savings goal is achievable within a specific deadline

💡 Pro Tip

If your goal date is flexible, check both modes — Required Contribution shows what you'd need to save by a fixed date, while Goal Date shows how much sooner a slightly higher contribution gets you there.

📖Savings Goal Calculator Guide

Works out either how much you need to save regularly to hit a target, or how long it will take to reach your goal at your current savings pace, with interest included.

When to use this

Use this to plan toward any savings target — an emergency fund, a big purchase, a deposit — whether you know your deadline and need the required contribution, or know your contribution and want to know your goal date.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. 1Choose your mode Required Contribution (solve for how much to save) or Goal Date (solve for when you'll reach your goal).
  2. 2Enter your goal and current savings Your target amount and what you've already saved toward it.
  3. 3Set your timeframe or contribution In Required Contribution mode, pick a target date or a duration. In Goal Date mode, enter your regular contribution amount and frequency.
  4. 4Add an interest rate if relevant Interest compounds monthly regardless of your contribution frequency — an entered annual rate is applied as one-twelfth each month.
  5. 5Try the What-If Simulator Test a different contribution amount, extended or shortened timeframe, interest rate change, or a one-time lump sum.

Tips for best results

  • Use the "Required Saving — By Frequency" card to see your target contribution as a Daily, Weekly, and Monthly figure side by side, and pick whichever fits how you actually save.
  • A one-time lump sum can be added at a specific date — just make sure that date falls within your plan's timeframe, or it won't affect the result.
  • Remember that any interest rate you enter compounds monthly, not at your contribution frequency — this is a deliberate convention the tool uses consistently.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming interest compounds at your contribution frequency (e.g. daily or weekly) — it always compounds monthly, regardless of how often you contribute.
  • Adding a lump sum dated outside your plan's overall timeframe and expecting it to count — check the warning banner if this happens.
  • Expecting Goal Date mode to project indefinitely — it caps its search at 100 years and reports "not reachable" beyond that rather than an unbounded number.
